Logbook Hours 101: Making the Most of Your 120 Hours in NSW

Every learner driver in NSW knows the number: 120 hours, including 20 hours of night driving, before you’re eligible to move to your P1 licence. But clocking up hours in your logbook is about far more than hitting a number — it’s about building real skill. Here’s how to get genuine value out of every logged hour.

The Basics

  • You must record all supervised driving in your NSW Driver Log Book (digital or paper).
  • Your supervising driver needs to have held a full unrestricted licence for at least 12 months.
  • At least 20 hours must be night driving, and driving with a professional instructor can count toward extra bonus hours under the Structured Lessons scheme — worth checking the current allowance, as it changes from time to time.

Making Your Hours Count

✅ Mix up your conditions. Ticking off hours on the same familiar street doesn’t build real skill. Include wet weather, night driving, roundabouts, motorway merging and quiet rural roads.

✅ Don’t leave night hours until the end. Night driving conditions are genuinely different — reduced visibility, glare, wildlife — and rushing all 20 hours in the final weeks before your test isn’t ideal preparation.

✅ Book professional lessons early and often, not just at the end. A lesson early in your learning journey helps stop bad habits forming in the first place, rather than trying to correct them right before your test.

✅ Debrief after every drive. Even five minutes talking through what went well and what felt tricky with your supervising driver reinforces the learning far more than silently logging the kilometres.

✅ Use a mix of supervisors if you can. Different family members and friends often pick up on different things — but professional instruction ensures you’re learning current, correct technique from someone qualified to teach it.

Why It’s Worth the Effort

The 120-hour requirement exists because experience genuinely reduces crash risk in the first years of independent driving. Learners who get broad, varied practice — not just laps of the same block — consistently arrive at their test calmer and better prepared.
