Merging Made Simple: Getting Onto the Pacific Highway with Confidence

Merging is one of the manoeuvres that makes new drivers most nervous — and around Port Macquarie, that usually means merging onto the Pacific Highway or the Oxley Highway bypass. The good news? Once you understand the rule and practise it a few times with an instructor, it becomes second nature.

The Golden Rule

In NSW, when two lines of traffic merge into one and there’s no give way or stop sign, the vehicle that is behind must give way to the vehicle that is ahead — regardless of which lane either car started in. This is often called the “zip merge” rule, and it catches out a lot of learners (and plenty of experienced drivers too).

Example test-style question:

“Two lanes are merging into one and there are no signs or lane markings. Who must give way?”

  1. a) The vehicle on the right
  2. b) The vehicle behind
  3. c) The vehicle on the left

Answer: b) The vehicle behind. Position matters more than which lane you’re in.

Tips for a Smooth Merge

  1. Check your mirrors and blind spot early — don’t wait until the lane markings disappear to start planning.
  2. Match your speed to the traffic you’re merging into, not the speed you were doing on the on-ramp.
  3. Use your indicator early and confidently, then commit to the merge smoothly once there’s a safe gap.
  4. Avoid last-minute lane changes. Merging late and cutting across is dangerous and easy for an instructor or examiner to spot.
  5. Don’t stop on the on-ramp unless you absolutely have to. A rolling merge at a matched speed is far safer than trying to pull out from a standstill into fast-moving traffic.
