We know green means go and red means stop, but what does the yellow light mean?

🚩 Yellow Light = You Must Stop if Safe

In NSW, a yellow light means you must stop if it’s safe to do so before the ‘Stop’ line.
The only time you’re allowed to continue through a yellow light is when stopping safely isn’t possible — for example, if you’re too close to the intersection or braking suddenly would cause a hazard to you or someone behind you.

What You Shouldn’t Do

To stay safe and stay within the law:

  • ❌ Don’t speed up to beat the yellow light

  • ❌ Don’t slam on the brakes if someone is close behind you

  • ❌ Don’t enter the intersection if stopping safely is an option

Remember, yellow isn’t a signal to rush — it’s a warning that red is about to appear.
